What Is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people age 65 and older, though certain younger individuals with disabilities or specific medical conditions may also qualify.

There are four main parts of Medicare:

  • Part A – Hospital insurance for inpatient care, skilled nursing, and some home health services
  • Part B – Medical insurance for doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and durable medical equipment
  • Part C (Medicare Advantage) – An alternative to Original Medicare, offered by private insurers, often with extra benefits
  • Part D – Prescription drug coverage, available as a stand-alone plan or part of a Medicare Advantage plan

Original Medicare (Parts A & B)

Original Medicare is the traditional program run by the federal government. It gives you the freedom to see any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare, but it doesn’t cover everything.

You’ll still be responsible for deductibles, coinsurance, and services like dental, vision, and hearing, which aren’t included. That’s why many people add supplemental coverage to help pay for what Medicare doesn’t.

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies that have been approved by Medicare. These plans combine Part A and Part B coverage, and many also include prescription drugs, vision, dental, and wellness benefits.

Some Medicare Advantage plans have lower out-of-pocket costs than Original Medicare, but they typically require you to use providers within a specific network.

At Roses Insurance Group, we’ll help you compare plans so you can find one that balances cost, coverage, and convenience.

Prescription Drug Plans (Part D)

If you choose Original Medicare, you can add a stand-alone Part D plan for prescription drug coverage. Each plan has its list of covered medications, monthly premium, and pharmacy network.

We’ll help you find a plan that covers your prescriptions at the lowest possible cost, making sure you’re not paying for coverage you don’t need.

Supplemental Coverage (Medigap)

Private insurers sell Medigap plans to fill the “gaps” in Original Medicare. They can help cover deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance, providing more predictable healthcare costs.

These plans are standardized into different lettered categories (Plans A, G, N, etc.), but the costs and availability can vary. Please note that Medigap plans cannot be used in conjunction with Medicare Advantage plans. Trust us to explain each option and help you choose the one that’s best suited to your needs and budget.

When to Enroll in Medicare

  • Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): A 7-month window starting three months before you turn 65
  • Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): October 15 – December 7 each year, when you can change or add plans
  • Special Enrollment Periods (SEP): Available if you meet certain conditions, like losing employer coverage

Missing these windows can result in penalties or gaps in coverage, so we make sure you understand your timelines and never miss an important deadline.
